AntiWar.com: Let's start with this one. The site is devoted to the cause of non-interventionism and is read by libertarians, pacifists, leftists, "greens," and independents alike, as well as many on the Right who agree with their opposition to imperialism. This is the correct attitude, since it would be very helpful in these times if the various political factions concerned about the rapid erosion of our basic freedoms could learn to work together. For the most part, this isn't happening.
Centre for Research on Globalisation: This is an independent research and media group of writers, scholars and activists. They are based in Canada, and publish news articles, commentary, background research and analysis on a broad range of issues; focussing on social, economic, strategic, geopolitical and environmental processes. There is also an extensive archive of news articles, in-depth reports and analysis on issues which are barely covered by the mainstream media. Global Research has become a source of specialized information and analysis for journalists.
Lew Rockwell: This is a right wing news site, but anti-authoritarian. Oxymoron? No, just libertarian. There is a lot of good stuff here, and it's one site on the web that many libertarians go to for news. The site is pro free-market and anti-fascist. There is much focus on how "free enterprise" would work in the absense of the massive collusion between the public and private sector that characterizes american "capitalism". Lew Rockwell is the founder and president of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. This name will not ring a bell with progressives, but Mises is the author of the most important treatise ever written on the subject of economics: Human Action. It defines an economic system based entirely on free choice, and all Leftists should read it in order to get up to speed on economic issues.
From The Wilderness: This site is also non-partisan - equally critical of the Left and Right. The central focus is on Peak Oil and the precarious state of our economy due to hydrocarbon dependence and multiple economic bubbles (debt, credit, housing, trade deficit, budget deficit, consumer debt, derivatives). The author behind this site is Michael C. Ruppert, who is one of the more responsible researchers of 9-11 anomalies. As a news source, this site keeps up with the geopolitical events happening behind the scenes as the super-powers compete for the world's remaining resources. Articles posted to this site reflect the motives of our leaders more accurately than either the Right or the Left. This website and FTW have been repeatedly targeted by our intelligence agencies, and their offices were broken into during the summer of 2006. The computers were smashed, and Ruppert fled the US for Venezuela in fear for his life. The offices are now closed and new articles to the site are no longer posted. Mike Ruppert's health is failing. The articles remain a valuable and often prophetic source of information.
Prudent Bear: This is a good source for current information about our economy. The site is oriented towards investors, but events surrounding our economy effect us all. The focus is on the various credit and debt bubbles, such as housing, consumer debt, trade deficits and derivatives. The most current articles are right here.
We started this section with links to news sources that are NOT on the progressive Left, for balance. The mainstream media is not represented at all, as it is not a good source for either information or analysis. Nearly all censorship in our society in the broadcast and print media is done at the behest of its corporate owners and advertisers. Thus, nearly all the important censored material is found on websites, media and publications that are critical of corporate power. In other words: The Left.
The remainder of the links on this page are some the most prominent information sources for the Left. If you are reading this and are conservative or libertarian, chances are you have never looked to the Left for news. If you think you already know everything about the Left, click here.
Pacifica Radio - KPFT 90.1 FM: The single most valuable source of information and news in Houston is one of only 5 radio stations in the Pacifica Network. You need to print out the program schedule to find your way around, but it's on the website. Good times to listen for news are 8:00 to 10:00am, 5:00 to 7:00pm, and 11:00pm til midnight. A good sampling of some important interviews can be found in the Downloads section of this website. The music programming is also awesome. Sample it and find something new and non-repetitive.
Democracy Now: Amy Goodman is the most prominent and effective journalist in the real Liberal Media, yet few conservatives have even heard of her. Her shows are on 5 days a week, and carried on alternative outlets accross the nation - plus some satellite channels. The shows are also downloadable, and archived all the way back to September 1997. There is also a search engine, so you can easily find stuff on any topic.
Z Net and Z Magazine: This site has a massive amount of content from the entire spectrum of the intellectual Left. There are atricles on just about any subject, and articles by most prominent political intellectuals are posted here.
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting: FAIR is a national media watch group, and has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986. They look at news stories, showing what's covered and what is not - and demonstrating that the bias is always toward the Right. There is a magazine (Extra), and a weekly half hour radio show that is currently not aired locally. The shows, however, are downloadable from the website in MP3.
Project Censored: This is a media research group out of Sonoma State University which tracks the news published in independent journals and newsletters. From these, Project Censored compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media. They rank them. Thus, you can read the top 25 censored stories of 2006, 2005, 2004, etc. They are all there on one site.
Information Clearing House: This is another rich source of information on America's predicament regarding foreign policy, economics, and military adventures. Go there often.
Common Dreams: A national non-profit citizens' organization working to bring progressive Americans together to promote progressive visions for America's future. Founded in 1997, they are committed to being on the cutting-edge of using the internet as a political organizing tool - and creating new models for internet activism. There are lots of good articles here, posted by leading progressive intellectuals. There are also links to everything else.
Online Journal: This is another page that posts a lot of articles on many topics, plus archives to many more.
AlterNet: An award-winning news magazine and online community that creates original journalism and amplifies the best of dozens of other independent media sources. AlterNet's aim is to inspire citizen action and advocacy on the environment, human rights and civil liberties, social justice, media, and health care issues.
Buzzflash: This is an important source for the latest news. It is a page full of headlines that link to articles all over the world. The site does editorialize by demonizing the oppostion when paraphrasing the headlines. The ultimate sources are usually excellent. News of interest to progressives is posted here before it is posted elsewhere.
Black Box Voting: This is the Bev Harris site tracking and exposing problems with the new electronic voting machines. BlackBoxVoting.org is the official consumer protection group for elections. Bev's book (same name) is posted on-line here. Investigations are on-going in many states, and news is posted regularly. Other web sites keeping up with the mounting evidence of vulnerability in our election system are Vote Trust USA and Voters Unite. BTW: Clint Curtis is running for office. He is the computer programmer that was hired by Talahassee Republican Tom Feeney to rig the software in Florida voting machines in 2000 to steal elections. He is running against the man that hired him, and can personally attest to the corruption he witnessed behind closed doors.
